AMES, Iowa – Dec. 25, 2009; 4:30 p.m. update – The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is reporting several highways in western Iowa remain impassable due to drifted snow. Large drifts are prolonging the reopening of some roads. Iowa DOT road crews will be out in force tonight, where needed, as long as visibility permits. Personnel are continuing to work on the reopening of closed roadways, while keeping others open. The Iowa DOT has been notified that the Nebraska Department of Roads has closed Interstate 80 at the Iowa/Nebraska border. Motorists already en route to Nebraska should seek shelter in the Council Bluffs/Omaha area at a local truck stop, motel or other traveler service. Western half of Iowa Travel is currently not advised on the majority of roadways in the western one-half of the state, as well as some roads in central Iowa (Des Moines area included).
