Why has the English grammar in todays society become so improper?

Well Americans have been trying to differentiate American English from British English since this country began. Whenever we became a new nation we changed the spellings of many words. Words that ended in -our became words that end in -or (labour to labor), grey became gray, and more. Although most of that was just spelling. I don’t know if we also started to change prepositions in sentences then or later. Anyway the point of the last sentence was in American English we say “I am in school” and British English stayed “I am at school” (or maybe I switched them around, I don’t know it makes no difference to me which I hear). Over time I think we started doing other things to differentiate and it went too far.I don’t like improper English either. I recently became a grammar fanatic mainly because of Spanish class and my fascination with Spanish grammar. That doesn’t change the fact that I am a grammar fanatic in English.
