Why has the degradation of forests become such a global issue?

Plants/trees release oxygen gas into the air during the process of photosynthesis and absorb carbon dioxide-it’s all about the green house effect/ozone layer depletion and global warming. We are aware that carbon dioxide and other gases are a major factor in the depletion of the ozone layer and global warming, and we also know that forests play a large part in ‘clearing’ these gases from the atmosphere, so with a huge loss in forest area there are more gases and less trees to absorb them. Deforestation also weakens the soil causing erosion (desertification), landslides and flooding etc, because roots help to keep the soil together and drain water away from the surface. If you think along those lines, your report shouldn’t be too difficult to put together. Good luck!
