Why has the credit crunch made pet owners abandon there pets?

Not that I condone it, but there are people who aren’t just experiencing a “credit crunch”, they are losing their homes, being evicted and ending up homeless. Our local shelter has been filled with pets from families that lost their home and have no where else to go with pets. It’s not a matter of spending a few dollars a month to feed, some people don’t even have that to feed their families and themselves – and food stamps can’t be used for dog food, either. Most apartments and rentals in my area require credit checks and such and don’t allow pets. Some people are desperate just to keep a roof over their families heads and can’t find a place to keep their pets. The only other option for some is to surrender them for adoption. There have also been a number of cases where the family has been evicted for a sheriff sale and have left their pets behind in the empty houses. I couldn’t imagine what would happen to us if we were faced with losing our home – 3 dogs, 3 cats, fish, rabbits, 50+
