Why has so much money been spent on the A3 that doesn’t reduce traffic congestion?
A.It is not possible to improve the road network to keep pace with the continued growth in traffic. This is a national problem that is especially acute in south Hampshire, with its unique economic and geographical character. One of the ways to make better use of the existing road network is to improve the use of public transport, which will only happen if the services are made more reliable and represent a realistic alternative to car travel. In the 1990s the A3 corridor was identified as a key public transport route between the centre of Portsmouth and the suburban settlements to the north. And as part the South Hampshire Rapid Transit Network it could have even greater benefits.
