Why has Poland Spring proposed a load station on Route 302 in East Fryeburg?
The Town of Denmark has approved a spring water source for Poland Spring to use at its bottling plants in Maine. Poland Spring identified the location in East Fryeburg to build a load station because it was a 60-acre site, screened from but accessible to Route 302 – a state designated heavy haul truck route – and would eliminate truck traffic on smaller roads. We also thought that Fryeburg would appreciate the additional property tax revenue from a facility that otherwise does not add a significant impact on municipal services. Will this facility draw water from the Town of Fryeburg? No. This facility will connect via pipeline to the spring in Denmark. Is this the same facility that the planning board voted to approve in 2005? Yes. A group of residents appealed the Planning Board’s decision, and the Zoning Board of Appeals reversed the Planning Board decision. Then Poland Spring appealed, and that approval was upheld (validating the Planning Board’s initial approval) with the condition
