Haven’t been able to look at the photo, but it does sound like it could be flea allergic dermatitis. Even though you’re using Frontline monthly, if a cat is allergic to fleas their skin can erupt like crazy if they get so much as one bite. There could be the odd flea around if you haven’t sprayed your house recently – there is a real flea problem around at the moment, plenty of people who regularly use Frontline have been getting infestations because dormant eggs have been hatching out in their houses. If it is flea allergic dermatitis, the vet will get you on a full flea treatment regime, probably Frontline Combo or Frontline and Program, and regular house spraying. As the skin is this bad he’ll probably also give a steroid shot to calm down the immediate itching. I’d be interested to hear if it is FAD, or if it’s something else! It could really be any kind of skin infection as caused by any kind of allergy or bacteria/fungus at all, but fleas are the most common cause of skin problem
