Historically, India and Malaysia have had a very strong public healthcare system. As former British colonies, both countries’ medical establishments maintained a strong link with Britain after independence. Many physicians and hospital administrators were trained and worked in Britain prior to returning to their home countries. In addition to Britain, many physicians from India and Malaysia began to train in the United States in the 1980’s. When the private healthcare sector began to rapidly develop in these countries in the 1990’s, many of the top physicians that were educated and trained overseas played an instrumental role in that development.
