Why has Council mapped overland flow paths?

The Flood Flag Map shows all known sources of flooding in Brisbane, including the path stormwater runoff is expected to take following an exceptionally heavy storm that might happen once every 50 years. This mapping was one of the key recommendations that came out of the Lord Mayor’s Taskforce on Suburban Flooding. The Flood Flag Map will provide the community with a guide for better planning, building and development. It will lead to greater awareness of the impact of stormwater runoff from severe storms and therefore, better planning and development decisions to minimise these impacts. Council has an obligation to provide flood information, to ensure the Brisbane community is informed about potential flood risks and can make informed choices when purchasing, renting, building or renovating property.
