Why has Cornell committed to developing a CAP?
Cornell University has been a national leader on the broad issue of sustainability for decades. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community leaders have advocated for continued leadership in this area. Sustainability is no longer viewed as solely an environmental concern. The economic and social benefits of a green economy are numerous. As such, Cornell has committed to achieving carbon neutrality in an effort to address what has become the central issue of sustainability – climate change. By developing and implementing a CAP, Cornell will further coordinate its diversity of institutional and academic sustainability initiatives, reaffirm its commitment to environmental stewardship and economic development in New York State, and offer a model to other institutions, both in the State of New York and nationally.
