Why has boycott of marking and exam boards been chosen as the form of action?
• Because it is the most effective form of action short of a strike. • It affects almost all our members, does little irreversible damage to students, takes effect relatively quickly and has a rapidly growing impact, and therefore maximises the pressure on employers to return quickly to negotiations. • Boycotting assessment is action which most members can take part in so it does not fall unfairly on a few, while all are affected by working to contract. • There are of course many other ideas such as not attending meetings or not answering e-mails but these are difficult to organise, have a limited impact. Nobody will doubt the effectiveness of not marking. • Students cannot gain qualifications or progress towards them.
