Why has Berry chosen to pursue membership in NCAA Division III?
Division III provides the best opportunity for Berry to increase the visibility and diversity of its athletic programs while also placing a high priority on academic achievement and the overall quality of the college experience for student-athletes. Membership in NCAA Division III makes it possible for Berry to grow its athletic programs in new and exciting ways. This includes the addition of men’s and women’s swimming and diving and women’s softball in 2009-10 and men’s and women’s lacrosse in 2010-11. At the same time, Division III’s scheduling philosophy provides more time for athletes to become fully engaged as students and involved in other aspects of student life. Berry President Stephen R. Briggs discussed the subject of athletic affiliation at length in the spring issue of Berry magazine. Click here to read his column.
