Why HalogenWare Retriever is automatically detected on Windows but not on other Java-enabled platforms, such as Linux or Mac OS X?
Retriever’s author Hayden Legendre graciously provided a patch implementing automatic detection in a cross-platform fashion. Unfortunately his clever method relied on the Java plugin, causing the JVM to be started inside the browser on every startup: an obviously unacceptable memory and performance burden, especially if you actually used a different download manager. Windows-only detection, instead, just performs one registry key, with no overhead. If you still want to use Retriever with FlashGot on non-Windows OS, you can create a custom download manager definition with the following data: Name: Retriever Executable: /usr/java/jdk1.5.0/jre/bin/java* Template: -jar /usr/local/share/HalogenWare/Retriever/Retriever.jar** [URL] [Referer:REFERER] [Cookie:COOKIE] *Actual path to the java executable on your system may vary.
