Why Grow Open-Pollinated Or Heirloom Seeds Instead of Hybrid Seeds?
Like we always seem to do, humans found a way, many decades ago, to interfere with nature. We became greedy, and we began “Playing God” when it comes to growing produce. With the demand for faster, larger crop yields, farmers begun buckling under the pressure and started exploring ways to grow produce quicker, larger, and more abundantly with (what they thought to be) less work. The hybrid seed was born. The concept of the hybrid seem is pretty easy to understand: take two plants, of the same species, but from different parental lines, and breed them. The result is the hybrid. The idea, obviously, is to cross two plants, the best of the best in their lineage, and born to them will be a combination of the two. Sounds like a great idea, right? However, even though the offspring is bigger, more colorful, and yields faster, the result is disappointing.
