Why give NPIs to non-billing providers, such as nurses?

0

The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine (BORIM) has been assisting non-MD and non-billing providers, such as nurses, dentists and psychologists with obtaining NPIs from CMS. NPIs for all health care providers will simplify administration for health plans and providers’ offices and will reduce the chance for duplication of NPIs. NPIs will not be required for these providers, but strongly suggested. If all nurses have NPIs, there will be no duplication with physicians’ NPIs. Also, Massachusetts is working toward providing electronic medical records for all providers. All providers having NPIs will allow for a common data base for utilization management, reporting and other data tracking tools.
