It had been almost 2 years since the Trade center attacks, with the hunt for Bin Laden going nowhere and a election coming up, the easiest and best way to ensure a re-election for Bush was an easy victory somewhere.Since the Iraqis had basically laid down their arms during the first Gulf War, Bush saw the chance and took it. Historically voters are reluctant to vote against a “war-time President”, WMD’s were a convenient excuse as the US had supplied them to Saddam during the 80’s when Iran was the enemy and Iraq the ally. As far as saying it was because of Saddam defying UN sanctions, that again was an easy excuse but check the history of country’s that defy UN resolutions, China, human rights, Russia, and Israel are among the biggest defying members of the UN so that excuse holds no water.
