WHY ECUMENICAL COUNCILS?
Seven great Councils of the Undivided Catholic Church were held to deal with particular challenges to the Church’s Teaching about Jesus Christ. Those Councils, known as Ecumenical Councils because they were representative of the whole Church, answered those challenges by appealing to Holy Tradition. Faithful to the Holy Tradition, the authoritative teaching set forth by these Councils was received by the whole Church in full awareness that God the Holy Spirit had spoken through them, in accordance with Christ’s promise that the Holy Spirit would always keep His Church in right belief, faithful to the Holy Tradition.
