There is no way to predict when or where an earthquake will occur, but we can be sure they will occur often at the edge of the plates in the earth’s crust. Some of these zones on the edges are subduction zones, where one plate is being sucked under the other. An example of this is the San Andreas fault. But quakes also occur, albeit less violently, with great frequency in the centre of the plate. An example of this would be Greece, a major centre of seismic activity in Europe, and the British Isles, where minor tremors occur about 200 times a year, and a major quake is a once in 300 year event, the last major catastrophic event was a tsunami from the Lisbon quake in the 1500s. There the reason is the plate is being pulled, and also subject to forces rotating the plate.
