Because in comparison to the planets, the Sun is HUGE and has the greatest gravitational pull, therefore the smaller planets orbit around it. Same thing happens with microscopic objects. EDIT: It’s kinda like taking a ball and rolling around an angled frictionless surface with a hole in the center…As long as the ball keeps up the speed (which it should on an impossible-yet-theoretical frictionless surface), it will never fall closer to the hole…but if you slow it down to an almost stop then it will roll right down into it. The same goes with planets…Each planet is at a certain point in the distance from the Sun that it will neither break nor collapse into the gravitational pull of the Sun. Though nobody knows what could happen millions of years from now as the star dies and planets decay…
