Why dose Al Gore have the hurricane spinning the wrong way on the cover of The Inconvenient truth?
In the lower levels of the atmosphere the winds are counterclockwise around a tropical cyclone in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere, so either way could be correct. In the upper levels they actually reverse direction. It just looks like an artistic stylization to me. EDIT: Andrew, I’m curious, I couldn’t find the reference “usually” in the link you provided, and I believe that tropical cyclones ONLY rotate counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. If you can find a counterexample to this I will happily send you $10. I’m not talking about something on the scale of a tornado, just tropical cyclones (hurricanes, typhoons, etc.). It is theoretically possible but extremely unlikely. ANOTHER EDIT: No problem Andrew. I really am interested in this question, and think it could be possible for an equator-crossing hurricane–of which I’m yet to find an example of also!
