Why don we distill sea water and use for drinking?
Distilling would be too energy intensive for practical use. But a great deal of sea water is purified to drinking water standards through a process known as reverse osmosis. To understand distillation for water, it takes a lot energy to get water to 100C, and a tremendous amount of energy to get water at 100 C to steam at 100C. This becomes cost prohibitive. Reverse osmosis simply uses permeable membranes that allow water to pass through the pores, but leaves everything else behind. Yes, it takes energy, but not as much as distillation does.
