Why don we choose a patron saint of Britain and have another bank holiday?

Here in the Republic of Ireland St. Patrick’s Day is a bank holiday celebrated on 17th of March each year and he wasn’t even Irish. I don’t understand why England, Scotland and Wales don’t have days off for their patron saints. Northern Ireland has St. Patrick as their patron saint and it is also a bank holiday there.
