They actually have a population shortage in Africa. Historically, this has always been the case, which is why slavery was so prominent in African societies. (Slavery existed within Africa long before it was exploited by the Arab Empire and then the Europeans/Americas). With disease, wild animals, tribal conflicts, destabilized economies and governments and natural disasters, have many children is the only form of insurance a family has. While their birth rates are high, their mortality rate is staggering. The food issue then turns into an economies of scale issue. Large families historically fair better than smaller ones, as there are more members to contribute to the cultivation and collection of food. This is why we see large families in Africa, as well as strong tribal/familial bonds. The reason why they have some many children is mainly due to the families with fewer children didn’t make it.
