Why don the San Francisco Giants have their names on their home uniforms?
As far as I can tell, it’s a matter of tradition and those are tough to break in baseball. Originally players’ uniforms had no number or name. Numbers were added to show batting order. Having names on the uniforms is a fairly recent trend. As the old saying goes: “You can’t tell the players without a scorecard” and it may be that selling these programs is partially behind the nameless uniforms. As of 2007, the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants do not display their players’ names on their home uniforms; the Yankees also do not display them on their road uniforms.
