Why dont people stand up to Bully`s in the workplace?
Good question. It is very hard to stand up to someone who has a lot of power. Very few people will confront a bully, because they tend to be in a position of authority and how do you challenge that? If it is just one person who is being bullied, they are usually very alone and isolated, because no one is prepared to support them against the bully. This was clearly demonstrated in the way Shilpa Shetty was bullied on Celebrity Big Brother last year. Although she maintained her dignity and attempted to stand up to the bullies – she did it on her own! I worked with a bully and was bullied dreadfully by her. My boss was aware and did nothing. My junior colleagues kept telling me she had been like that for years, as though that made it acceptable. I tolerated it because I loved my job and I tried to avoid her as much as possible.
