Why don people snore while they are awake?

On a few rare occasions, I have caught myself snoring when I was wide awake. A plausible explanation about why people usually only snore when they are asleep would seem to be something to do with certain parts of the respiratory system being relaxed in a manner that they wouldn’t normally be when someone is awake and active. However, on those few occasions where I caught myself snoring when I was awake, I was under stress and anything but relaxed. I guess I don’t have a good direct answer to this question, other than to point out that the basic premise thereof (that people never snore when they are awake) appears to be less than entirely true.
