Why don my files open with softwrap on?
You can turn soft wrap on globally as the default setting for new files, or files with no state information, using the Soft Wrap switch in the Editor Defaults preferences panel. However, this setting will not affect existing files (i.e. files that already have state information), which can have soft wrap on or off independently of the global default. To turn wrapping on (or off) for such files, use the Text Options dialog (in the Edit menu) or the “Soft Wrap Text” option in the Window Options popup menu on the status bar. If you need to change a whole bunch of files, you can use the ‘TextChanger’ utility (available on the BBEdit CD-ROM, or from our ftp site) to zap their resource forks, thus removing the state information, so that the global setting will apply.
