If you are experiencing problems with menus not allowing you to select items, try turning NumLock off. In X11R6 (and newer), the NumLock key is a modifier. Many clients (X programs) haven’t yet been updated to the R6 way of doing things. They need to ignore modifiers when looking for button click/release events.
