Why don animals experience menstruation?

All animals with a placenta has some type of menstruation. It can either be an overt menstruation where the uterus lining comes out (you bleed), or covert menstruation where the uterus lining is reabsorbed. Though covert menstruation is the most common form, humans are not unique in having overt menstruation, nor unique in having a monthly (or close to monthly) cycle. All other primates have monthly cycles. Dogs and cats do not have menstruation, the bleeding you can sometimes see when they are in heat comes from other sources and is not menstrual blood. Hope that helps!
