Why don American kids wear uniforms in the public school system?
In the United States, each individual school district has its own elected school board which establishes school policies, chooses the textbooks and basic curriculum and hires its teachers, administrators and staff. There are some state and federal guidelines they must follow, but as far as dress code and certain other social policies, the board, in conjunction with the Superintendent they put in charge, sets these policies. In some public school districts across America, school boards have instituted strict dress codes while others are more relaxed. More districts are moving toward a uniform policy, however, for various reasons. Principals at many districts often are called upon to send students home for some infraction or other, whether it be an offensively worded t-shirt, an inappropriate length skirt or shorts, or some other distraction.
