Why DoesnT Windows Movie Maker Like .Mpg Files?

I have a video camera that the video from it gets imported as .mpg files, and Windows Movie Maker doesn’t seem to like them. On my computer I get the audio but no video, and on other computers I get a message about a missing codec. The files work in the video editing software that came with the camera, but Windows Movie Maker works a whole lot better for what I want to do. Is there anything I can do to get the files to work in Windows Movie Maker?
