A. For philosophical reasons. Willett administration and teachers have long felt that, while certainly an occasion for celebration, the completion of elementary school does not call for a “graduation.” That ceremony reflects the end high school or college and the beginning of adult life. Up until three years ago, the school held a “Moving Up” assembly for 5 th and 6 th graders, but that was abandoned in favor of activities the kids seem to enjoy more – swimming in the morning at the UCD Rec Pool, followed by lunch in the Willett quad with a student from each class sharing reflections of their years as an elementary school student. We do understand that other schools opt for more formal ceremonies, but we prefer an opportunity to celebrate the relatively carefree life of elementary school before moving on. Q. I am not clear on the issue of wearing sandals (not flip flops) to school. My daughter’s teacher is enforcing a no sandals rule, but many other teachers aren’t. It seems rather amb
