Why doesn’t UMASS Amherst have a major in education?
UMass Amherst doesn’t offer a major in education, although it does offer a minor and multiple graduate programs in education. Primarily we are reflecting the state’s stance on teacher education, with a strong emphasis on candidates possessing strong subject matter knowledge. When students major in another field, they obtain strong subject matter knowledge in addition to keeping doors open to other careers and opportunities.
