(excerpt from an e-mail response to a member’s question) We spent about a year working out how we would approach the challenge of adding the industry question to our survey. We had a list of about 40 to begin with, then took it down to less than 10, back up to about 20, down to four or five (as some of our sister associations do in other provinces) and finally decided on the ones you see on our survey now. The question of what to do with the consulting ‘industry’ came up many times of course during this discussion. We approached it this way – for what industry is the consulting work done? If it’s the oil and gas industry, that’s one thing. If it’s for transportation industry, that’s something else. We finally decided that for the purposes of our survey, the ‘consulting’ industry really isn’t an industry category at all, since whatever work they do can always fall into one of the categories that we ended up with.
