Why doesn’t the gardeners’ market carry more different types of vegetables?

0

Our gardeners’ market carries seasonal vegetables. When I was a child, we did not get vegetables from all over the world. We ate what was growing locally. For instance, this winter, my husband and I have been devouring grapefruit and oranges, both available from Texas growers from November to April. Blackberries get ripe in May and June, and we’ll have tomatoes from about May to October (or whenever the first freeze is). If you know when fruits and vegetables are available in Texas, you can be sure of getting them fresh and of good quality. If you would like a Texas produce calendar that lists when Texas-grown fruits and vegetables are harvested and available in local markets, either ask the AgriLife Extension agent or ask me and I will send you a copy. By the way, we’ve finished the cabbages in my garden and are now eating onions, carrots and strawberries. My blueberries are green and are starting to turn. When you eat in season, everything grown in the garden means more to you.
