Why doesn the ARRT limit the number of credits earned through directed readings and home-study programs?
The intent of the ARRT CE requirements is to provide a mechanism for technologists to fulfill their responsibility to maintain competence and prevent professional obsolescence. Any limitations to the types of activities would need to be related to this goal. To the extent that the goal can be met entirely through a given type of activity, no limits are warranted. Directed readings and home study courses serve as a valuable source of CE for many technologists, especially in rural areas. These types of activities, like those on the Internet, are becoming more popular as the technology advances. We are not aware of any data that challenges the validity of the CE experience when completing a directed reading versus a formal lecture.
