Why doesnt sharing a single SSL certificate among several domains work?
There have been attempts to share a single SSL certificate among several domains in a shared hosting environment. For example, a Web hosting company could get a certificate for its own domain and then link to other domains from within its secure site. Other domains could then use encryption capabilities of the Web host’s certificate, but there is no authentication of individual domains. This is a serious breach in security, since online customers do not know to whom they are sending their information. It also exposes Web hosts to potential claims of liability, since their certificates could be used to secure fraudulent transactions. Lastly, it also violates the terms of certificate use and forfeits the NetSure protection provided with the certificate.
