Why doesn S&D offer Newspaper or Magazine print advertising?
Schiel & Denver’s current policy not to offer print advertising opportunities is based on the fact that they are not economically rewarding enough. We’re protecting our authors. A publisher could spend tens of thousands of dollars taking out a full-page advert in a newspaper or magazine, and only sell one book. The reality is that print advertising only works for corporate brand awareness; or very famous authors. In most other case, it usually doesn’t sell lots of books. Even big publishers who run large poster campaigns across metropolises don’t have reliable evidence that consumers actually go and buy a copy of their book product based on viewing a poster advert. Provocative and shock adverts designed to stir publicity, usually get banned after a few days, especially if the landlord objects. In short, print advertising is too intangible and it doesn’t work for independent books.
