Why doesn Ryedale District Council collect plastic from my property with the other recyclable materials?
The Council ran a trial for the kerbside collection of plastic bottles from October 2007 to March 2009. During this trial, we collected plastic bottles separately from other recyclable materials in a dedicated vehicle. The purpose of the trial was to ascertain the quantities of material available for recycling from each property and to calculate the cost of this collection method. In terms of environmental benefits in the form of carbon dioxide savings, we concluded that plastic bottles need to be collected together with other recyclable materials on one vehicle. Using a separate vehicle to collect plastic bottles creates a negative environmental impact in comparison with the tonnages recycled. What is the Council planning to do about recycling plastic bottles? Recycling collection vehicles are leased over a six year period.
