Why doesn rehabilitation such a counciling and therapy classes work in prison?
There are several endemic problems here. First, you can only rehabilitate someone that is willing to accept new ideas and incorporate them. If a person does not want to change, you are wasting your time in teaching them. Second is environment. You incarcerate the felon. He serves his time. Then when he is released, he goes right back to the same neighborhood and same friends that got him in prison to begin with. Rehabilitation only works when the full package is accepted and applied by the felon. He will need to want to make the change PLUS he needs to get out of the old neighborhood and away from his old friends. Most of the felons today are Generation X kids who have no family ties to speak of and believe only in their “friends” they ran with on the street. We are setting the entire system up with a revolving door.
