Why doesn Obama bring up Yucca Mountain?
[Read the article: Live blogging: Missed opportunities on energy issue] [Read more letters about this article: Here] Because, eventually, we need nuclear power as an intermediate step to sustainable energy sources, unless you want immediate and drastic powerdown. Due to this and our current stockpiles of nuclear waste, we need a place to stash it. Right now, Yucca looks like the safest and least politically damaging place to put it (unless we ship it to China so it can come back to us in food). Obama doesn’t want to lock his administration into a policy that he might have to backtrack on. Especially on an issue about a state that is looking less and less like a toss-up. This is a sleeping dog that he doesn’t need to rouse.
