WHY DOESNT NYI UTILIZE BANDWIDTH FROM LOW COST PROVIDERS SUCH AS WILLIAMS AND COGENT?
We do not utilize networks such as Williams and Cogent because of their reputation in the industry. While they are the cheapest wholesale bandwidth solution out there, they attract clients of an illegitimate nature; that is spammers, adult web hosts, irc servers, etc; and this causes their network to be undesirable at the more mission critical level. We maintain transit from only top tier providers such as UUNet, Level 3, Qwest, Allegiance Telecom, etc. as well as peering connection with public exchanges such as NYIIX. In the long run, you will be much better off with non-Cogent bandwidth as it is sure to provide more stability and lower latency. There are companies out there that offer uncapped or unmetered bandwidth and claim a full 100 Mbps for your connection, but often times this is an oversold connection to a second or third tier provider.
