Why doesn’t it come with independent suspension?
Let’s face it, the smart car handles really good. The engineers new what they were doing when they designed the rear suspension, its simple, its light and it works. Designing an independent suspension isn’t a job to be taken lightly, there are many factors such as unsprung weight, camber change through travel, not to mention spring rates and shock valving that are very easy to get wrong and extremely difficult to get right. We decided to keep the stock suspension and subframe in tact because of these reasons…plus you don’t have to buy different wheels. On a side note, you will shave a few hundred pounds off the rear of your Smart with the installation of this kit, which is a really good thing! As a result the rear end is going to lift up a bit from lack of weight, lowering springs for the rear are recommended but not a necessity.
