Why doesn’t FTP (File Transfer Protocol) work for transferring files?

Stanford has turned off regular FTP – users must now have a client that supports SFTP (secure FTP). Any of the current FTP clients, such as Fetch on the Mac or SecureFX for Windows support this. Both are available on http://ess.stanford.edu (Similarly, Telnet has been replaced with SSH (secure shell)). The default with Fetch is FTP, so you need to change it to SFTP: Once you adjust the popup menu to SFTP, it should stay that way… Depending on the destination for the file, some kind of logon is required for that sever. Your Leland (AFS) space, for instance, will require your SUNet ID and password. If it’s a STEP server, then having an account (or using someone else’s) may be needed.
