Why doesn ECA&D use the WMO station numbers as ids?
WMO station numbers are not used as unique identifier for the daily ECA series, because not all stations with data have assigned WMO numbers. Also, the series representative for a single location often stem from two nearby sites with different station numbers. Therefore, we use separate ID’s for each series of minimum, mean and maximum temperature, precipitation amount, pressure, etc, and in addition, a location ID for a group of series that belong to a particular location. The location ID’s are also used to identify the blended and updated series.
