Why doesn council collect rubbish and recycling from businesses?
Unlike private residents, businesses do not pay extra rates that fund a recycling and rubbish service. There are several reasons for this, one of them being that in many cases, different businesses have had need to dispose of particular and often hazardous types of waste, and a specialised contracted service is found to be more suitable for them. Similarly, it has been found that businesses produce very low levels of recyclable containers (such as bottle and cans), and so the residential recycling service is not suitable for them. However, Brimbank City Council and Sustainability Victoria are committed to assisting businesses and schools within the municipality to reducing waste and reclaiming valuable resources.
