Why doesn Andy Roddick ever really win any Grand Slams?
As said, his ground-strokes are not as good as the top two, and I personally feel he left it too late in his career to work on things other than his massive serve. Although he can get a real downer on himself, I don’t think his mental attitude is his biggest problem. To some extent, Roddick suffered the Lleyton Hewitt syndrome – in the temporary vacuum left between Sampras and Federer (and Nadal, Djokovic etc), he looked really good and was a return to the big booming serve being the primary weapon. As with Hewitt though, what worked in those years between 2001 – 2003 would not work against the skill and finesse of Federer. As of 2009, he did work on his game a lot – at Queen’s and Wimbledon he came to the net far more effectively for one thing – but he should have focused on altering his game much earlier in his career.
