Why does water have cohesion/ adhesion???
– cohesion refers to the water molecules strong attachment to each others. – adhesion is simply the water molecule’s ability to attach to other molecules. (btw, you’ll need to know this for plants) now, the reason water adheres to other molecules is because Water has a high surface tension caused by the strong cohesion between water molecules because it is polar. Water is a very strong solvent, referred to as the universal solvent, dissolving many types of substances. Substances that will mix well and dissolve in water, e.g. salts, sugars, acids, alkalis, and some gases: especially oxygen, carbon dioxide (carbonation), are known as “hydrophilic” (water-loving) substances, while those that do not mix well with water (e.g. fats and oils), are known as “hydrophobic” (water-fearing) substances. Another very important force that causes the water molecules to stick to one another is the hydrogen bond. good luck.
