Why does volumetric efficiency increase with engine rpm in internal combustion engines?

This is a 100% shot in the dark but my guess is that as the engine increases its speed in RPM, the speed of the air being sucked into the cylinders, increases at a rate that is exponentially greater that the reduction in valve opening time. This would force a greater volume of air into the cylinder.
