Why does Twitter only allow 140 characters per tweet?
According to Twitter founders Biz Stone and Jack Dorsey, there are two reasons for the 140 character limit. 160 characters is actually the text message limit, but Twitter subtracted 20 to make room for the name of the person making the post, and just generally to make the service work on as many devices as possible. Dorsey adds that the 140 character limit forces people to be creative in their writing.
